Avoid the $180-per-user-per-year 3G rip-off

If you have a business smartphone data plan with your carrier, chances are you're paying $180 per user per year more than you have to. The reason? The major wireless carriers charge $15 extra per month on some or all of their 3G data plans for access to corporate email, meaning Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, or GroupWise.

Pushing the "Go Button": Part 1

Pushing the

Authored by: Francisco Noguera

A little more than a year ago I made a decision and accepted an offer to come to Washington and work for a project -this website- I had long been fond of. Doing so has exceded my expectations in many ways. It has opened doors, sparked ideas and provided me with opportunities I'm deeply greatful for. The best part of this year has been and continues to be being able to meet wonderful entrepreneurs, obsessed with changing the world. Learning about how they intend to do so is the part I enjoy the most about my work.

Over the last two weeks I've been able to reconnect with some of those people I've met and I'd like to share some reflections about their work and, most importantly, about the decisions they have made to make their visions happen and become the change they want to see in the world. Today I'll write a few lines about one of them, my friend Rose Shuman, and over the weekend I hope to jot down some additional ones about others I've recently had the opportunity to spend time with and see in action, turning their visions into tangible change.

Interested in technology and its impact on society, Rose tried hard to get an interview with Google.org until she did, about two years ago. Sitting in her hotel room in Palo Alto the night before, she nervously prepared herself to hopefully impress the group in charge of evaluating her candidacy with a really smart idea. That's when she came up with the question of whether the Internet and information could be brought to those least able to access it the way you or I are doing right now. The next day she walked into the interview she articulated the still vague vision of a box through which illiterate people would be able to ask questions and listen to the answers, as long as they were available online.

Rose ultimately didn't get the job but the Google folks loved the idea and encouraged her to explore it further. She did and the pilot became a project that was later called Question Box. I've written about it before, and so has Boing Boing

Linux Mobile Targets Android in China

A Linux-based mobile OS is set to launch in China, presenting a possible threat to competitors as they vie for smartphone and tablet customers in the Asian market.

Chinese ecommerce company Alibaba says it will launch its Aliyn OS at the end of the month, after working on it for three years. Phone manufacturer Tianyu intends to sell the Aliyn-based K-Touch Cloud-Smart Phone W700 for $416 in several days, with plans to market a tablet soon.

Aliyn's main features include the ability to run Android apps in the cloud, as well as those created with JavaScript and HTML5. It offers users cloud-based email, data, text message and photo storage too, besides regular web search and GPS.

"Introducing cloud apps to mobile devices not only brings a whole new user experience, but also greater ease for third-party mobile software developers who will be able to use Internet technology such as HTML5 and JavaScript to reduce the complexity in the app development process," said Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing.

In most regions of the world, Aliyn would face fierce and nearly devastating competition from Google's Android and Apple's iOS. But in China where Tianyu's new phone is set to launch, the OS may have a chance. The country's mobile broadband infrastructure is still underdeveloped and essentially up for grabs to whoever can create the biggest presence there first.

China is still behind in the smartphone market, though 3G subscriber numbers jumped nearly 50 percent to almost 70 million last April. But given the country's enormous population, 70 million is a small number compared to the U.S. market, in which nearly half of phone owners have smartphones.

If Aliyn can create a foothold in time, then, it may stand a chance against planned marketing onslaughts from rivals Apple, Google and Nokia, which are also angling for the Chinese market.

Apple's COO Tim Cook reportedly held talks with China Mobile to introduce the iPhone on its network. Doing so would give it 600 million more customers in the country, especially if Apple also decides to provide a cheaper, prepaid version of its iPhone 3GS.

Android smartphone maker HTC also reports increased success in the Asian market, shipping 11 million smartphones inside China this last quarter.

Other Android phone manufacturers too have their eyes on the populous country, as analysts predict over one billion people there will own smartphones in the next five years.

Nokia too is looking to push into Asia with lower-end handsets, which could take a chunk out of smartphone sales since the latter tend to be more affordable.

The competition is fierce, but this unexplored market is up for grabs, and upstarts like Aliyn may see success if it can grapple with rivals for the upper hand.

Verizon Wins J.D. Power Award, AT&T Ranks Last

Verizon has the best customer service in the industry, according to a recent consumer care index, with its rankings providing an interesting snapshot of where the carriers stand.

J.D. Power and Associates awarded Verizon score of 770 out of a possible 1,000 points, just 4 points ahead of T-Mobile's 766. The two carriers have alternated in receiving this award in recent years, and these figures illustrate how close the finish was for the semiannual survey, which was released today.

Verizon scored high marks for handling calls, and T-Mobile got kudos for pleasing customers with its online support options.

The other two major carriers failed to reach the industry average of 762 in their Power Circle rankings. Sprint came in third place with 752, and AT&T came in dead last at 751.

Sprint's prepaid Boost Mobile business earned a score of 763, however, in a segment where customers reported generally lower satisfaction levels when compared to their contract counterparts.

"In particular, non-contract customers are considerably less satisfied than are contract customers in the areas of knowledge about plans; personal concern for customers; and apathy towards customers," said Kirk Parsons, senior director of wireless services at J.D. Power and Associates.

This dissatisfaction may be an opportunity to attract customers to the growing non-contract business, especially in a market moving towards tiered-data plans, which may funnel increasing number of consumers to prepaid options to save costs.

In light of its poor customer satisfaction ratings, AT&T may be pleased with current rival T-Mobile's high rating. If its pending merger with T-Mobile goes through, some of the smaller company's highly ranked customer care practices may rub off on it, especially since consumer concern accounts for a large chunk of opposition to the merger.

Last week, customers joined together to protest the proposed merger, which government regulators are currently reviewing. The customers retained a New York law firm to request arbitration, alleging the massive merger is a violation of the Clayton Antitrust Act.

"We've spent months compiling evidence of how this merger will cause higher prices and worse service," Steve Bursor, plaintiffs' attorney said. "We've hired experts who are prepared to testify at arbitration hearings across the country. And we are prepared to file hundreds of arbitration cases, any one of which could stop this merger."

Regardless of what happens with the merger and the litigation it inspires, all carriers have room for improvement since the scale tops out at 1,000 points -- pointing to perhaps an overall discontent of customers with carriers in general.

Hackers Break Into Car Locking Apps

Hackers may be able to break easily into apps that let users unlock their cars, as threat of cyber-attacks continues to grow.

ISec researchers Don Bailey and Matthew Solnik said they were able to break into and intercept messages between a car and its network within two hours, duplicating them on a laptop. Bailey and Solnik say they have produced a video that shows their technology working and plan to show it at the Black Hat Security Conference in Las Vegas next week.

Although the technology has yet to be widely released or used by real hackers, Bailey and Solnik maintain that if the technology is unchanged, skilled hackers will be able to easily unlock any car equipped with a remote control app, start the engine and even learn the coordinates of a built-in GPS.

ISec won't reveal who created the vulnerabilities inside this software, which are made even more timely by the string of cyber-attacks that have been hitting major corporations and governments. Recent attacks from hacker groups LulzSec and Anonymous have proven hackers are on the rise and may continue be a serious threat.

Other car-related apps may also be susceptible to hacking. An app from Parkmobile and Liberty Plugins allows electric vehicle owners pay to charge their vehicles with their smartphone. If hackers can figure out how to infiltrate this particular app, it may give them access to users' payment information.

If the technology used to unlock and start cars can't be made hacker-proof, its vulnerability may stifle similar types of innovation, and put other security-related apps at risk. Lock maker Schlage recently released an app, for instance, that lets smartphone users unlock their homes with the push of a button. Researchers have not done studies on the security of the app, but it may also attract unscrupulous cybercriminals' attention.

Users may be slow to pick up this tech unless they know it's safe and hackers are under control. If susceptible to security vulnerabilities, however, people may be reluctant to embrace the new technology and will hold tight to their old fashioned keys for the foreseeable future.

Mobile Disruption

Mobile Disruption

Authored by: Mark Beckford

I've always thought that the next major technology disruption would come from the developing world. This could partly be just a bias on my part (most of my career has been developing computer businesses in emerging markets). The underlying logic behind this belief is that disruptive innovations are cheaper, easier to use, and bring some type of end user value that doesn't exist in the current mainstream solution.

Emerging markets clearly require a more affordable solution. They also require something that is easy to use due to higher illiteracy rates and limited skills. Finally, in order for them to decide to use their hard-earned money on something, it has to be useful for them. Take a look at the PC. Even if someone gave PC's away for free, you still wouldn't see PC's sales go through the roof. Sure, there'd be a big bump, but not to the penetration level you see with TV's and other basic household appliances.

Even if a PC was made so easy to use (e.g. streamline and simplify the interface with large, logical icons) so someone that couldn't read or had no computer skills could use the PC easily, they likely wouldn't see that much value in it. The missing element is some unique value for consumers and micro-enterprises at the bottom of the pyramid. I don't think this value exists in PC's today.

Will the next "thought leader" please stand up? - Part 2

Will the next

Authored by: Mark Beckford

This post is the second part of a two-part series on thought leadership for computer makers in emerging markets. Part 1 focused on the companies striving for thought leadership over the last several years ... OLPC, Intel, Microsoft and AMD. Part 2 discusses the characteristics companies will need to develop if they want to become a "thought leader.

What is a thought leader?

There is a great quote from an unknown author that I believe is a perfect definition of thought leadership:

Thought leadership is recognition from the outside world that a company deeply understands its business, the needs of its customers, and the broader marketplace in which it operates. Thought leadership is built on what others say about you. When you have it, companies look to you for insight & vision, journalists quote you, analysts call you.

So you can't grant yourself thought leadership status. Others must seek you out due to your perceived expertise and credibility in a specific niche. Was Negroponte, Intel, Microsoft, or AMD ever a "thought leader" based on this definition? I think so. Negroponte got Koffi Anan, the UN Secretary General at the time, to endorse his effort. Craig Barrett of Intel, shortly after World Ahead, got invited to chair the UN's Global Alliance on Information Society Development (UN GAID).

The deeper question I have is: did coming up with a fancy name with supporting pillars and proof point make a difference? Probably. Whether one has expertise or not, creating awareness of this expertise is key to establish credibility, one needs a "messaging platform" and a communication strategy. This is really marketing 101. What's your message and how do you communicate it?

OLPC had a very simple messaging platform. "One Laptop per Child." Every child in the world has a laptop. As you peel back the onion, you find it is not just a cheap laptop, but a laptop with content and learning tools tailored for the unique needs of school children. Then one needs to get that message out through a massive marketing communications campaign, including PR, events, and direct engagement with key influencers worldwide. OLPC did this through Negroponte's "celebrity" status in the industry and his relentless global travels. It was harder for Intel. Because we did so many things in emerging markets, we were lost in the complexity and comprehensiveness of what was already being done. Intel needed to:

  1. Simplify and put more focus on specific areas that supported the goal of accelerating computer access to those that couldn't afford it (e.g. training teachers).
  2. Develop the proof points to support these focus areas, and fill in the gaps of what Intel wasn't doing enough of (e.g. not training enough teachers)
  3. Communicate this focused and simplified story more effectively. (e.g. improving a student's education by training more teachers and getting more computers into classroms)
  4. Say it over and over again. (e.g. after the initial global launch, we re-launched World Ahead country-by-country and announced PC donations to schools and a specific number of teachers we would train).

Simple, right? It would seem so on the surface, but it took many man-hours over many months to get this right.

The leadership void

I think a leadership void currently exists in this space. I also think this void will only get bigger. Thought leadership is not based on market share. It is based on perception. Perception can be short-lived and fickle. The emerging market initiatives from Intel, AMD, OLPC, and Microsoft have been around for several years. Time will erode the luster of these initiatives because:

  1. Hype always fades away (applies to all)
  2. Excessive public scrutiny heightens missteps (OLPC)
  3. The program loses its initial focus and evolves and becomes more complex (Intel)

On point #3, when intel turned World Ahead into a sales division, the World Ahead charter was expanded to encompass "all-things emerging markets" at Intel. (e.g. selling high-end processors in emerging markets while also pushing affordable computing.) In addition, as companies come under increased financial pressure from plummeting computer demand and shrinking IT budgets, these programs will come under increased scrutiny. When AMD's business began struggling against its rival Intel in late 2006, it had to cut back significantly on 50x15. Ultimately, AMD spun AMD off as an independent foundation. Will something similar happen at Intel and Microsoft? .Possibly. In tough times, companies' often put renewed focus on their "core" or mainstream business, Strategic, long-term initiatives often get left on the cutting room floor.

Who will fill the leadership void?

I think the time is right for somebody to fill this void. I mentioned in a previous post on my blog on this "mother of all disruptions" (the economic crisis) will create new losers and winners, Emerging markets are definitely struggling, especially those that are over-reliant on exports. Budgets are being cut. But stimulus investments could offset those cuts. Technology is still perceived as an important component of economic development. Thus, I believe the opportunity is still there. But I think governments, development banks and NGO's will be receptive for something new and different. All the "thought leaders" I have mentioned thus far have done a tremendous job convincing the world that computing is an important part of education and economic development. In my recent travels, every Ministry of Education I have visited has an ICT department. Large bids for computers are still being tendered. I believe the following criteria must be met for somebody to become a candidate for thought leadership.

  • The technology or product/solution from the candidate must be a "disruptive innovation." Something that truly changes the game for computers in terms of technology, business model, affordability and unique value add.
  • The potential candidate can't do it alone. It will need to create or lead a consortium of private and public entities that is build around a common purpose or goal.
  • Any new thought leader must show tangible results. OLPC, Microsoft, Intel and AMD all had grand stories and goals. But have they truly delivered to these goals? A thought leader built on press announcements vs. results will be heavily scrutinized. The negative attention in the press and blogosphere on Negroponte is a great example of this.
  • They will need to follow the four steps outlined above in creating a thought leadership platform, specifically: 1) a simple and focused messaging platform, 2) tangible and real supporting proof points, 3) an effective communications strategy, and 4) global and local communications. .

So who are your candidates for the next thought leader?

Companies Team Up to Stop Piracy

Internet service providers are joining with entertainment companies to curb online piracy, in a controversial move to wage war on illegal file-sharing.

ISPs today agreed to implement Hollywood's recommended six-shot warning program for those suspected of downloading copyrighted music and movies from sites like BitTorrent. Media companies involved in the agreement include the Recording Industry and Motion Picture Associations of America, along with various independent record companies and filmmakers. The ISPs at the table include AT&T, Cablevision, Comcast, Verizon and Time Warner Cable.

Under the Copyright Alert System, contractors for the entertainment industry will monitor users of illegal file-sharing services. If they discover someone passing along a copyrighted file, they will send the user's ISP a notice so the company can take punitive action.

The ISP will then issue up to six warnings, increasingly stronger in tone, before reducing Internet speed or even suspending service until the piracy ceases. The last step, however, is rarely used since many service providers aren't keen on terminating service for their own customers.

Comcast said it does not plan to cut service, while others have yet to respond on the topic.

The alliance between entertainment groups and ISPs comes as digital content increases in important to carriers and wireless service providers, who hope to become more than just "dumb pipes" for data, as consumers increasingly access media on phones, tablets and computers.

ISPs and entertainment groups have not always been allies. The RIAA sued Verizon eight years ago when the wireless provider refused to identify a customer accused of sharing music online.

But times have changed, and this year Comcast merged with NBC to become both an ISP and a content provider.

"The ISP's want to cooperate with Hollywood because the carriers recognize that their own growth depends in part on bundled content strategies," said Eric Garland of BigChampagne, a firm that tracks online media traffic. "They don't want to be just utilities providing Internet access, but premium content distributors as well."

Of course, the Copyright Alert program is unlikely to deter serious offenders, who will find creative ways to skirt around it not matter what. It's also making civil liberties groups nervous, as they fear companies could use these guidelines to punish subscribers without due process.

"It appears this would put the onus on the accused, which is not how things are supposed to work in our system," said Jay Stanley, an analyst with the American Civil Liberties Union.

Other corporations are starting to recognize the benefits of waging war on piracy as well. Google recently blocked common piracy terms from its Auto-Complete service. MediaFire, RapidShare and BitTorrent are no longer visible in Google's search bar, a move only fellow search industry firm Bing has made as well.

Piracy is becoming more difficult for the average person because of corporations' decisions to move against it. And it may be especially unsavory if ISPs start cutting Internet connections for those who dare to illegally download music and film files.
