Pushing the "Go Button": Part 1

Pushing the

Authored by: Francisco Noguera

A little more than a year ago I made a decision and accepted an offer to come to Washington and work for a project -this website- I had long been fond of. Doing so has exceded my expectations in many ways. It has opened doors, sparked ideas and provided me with opportunities I'm deeply greatful for. The best part of this year has been and continues to be being able to meet wonderful entrepreneurs, obsessed with changing the world. Learning about how they intend to do so is the part I enjoy the most about my work.

Over the last two weeks I've been able to reconnect with some of those people I've met and I'd like to share some reflections about their work and, most importantly, about the decisions they have made to make their visions happen and become the change they want to see in the world. Today I'll write a few lines about one of them, my friend Rose Shuman, and over the weekend I hope to jot down some additional ones about others I've recently had the opportunity to spend time with and see in action, turning their visions into tangible change.

Interested in technology and its impact on society, Rose tried hard to get an interview with Google.org until she did, about two years ago. Sitting in her hotel room in Palo Alto the night before, she nervously prepared herself to hopefully impress the group in charge of evaluating her candidacy with a really smart idea. That's when she came up with the question of whether the Internet and information could be brought to those least able to access it the way you or I are doing right now. The next day she walked into the interview she articulated the still vague vision of a box through which illiterate people would be able to ask questions and listen to the answers, as long as they were available online.

Rose ultimately didn't get the job but the Google folks loved the idea and encouraged her to explore it further. She did and the pilot became a project that was later called Question Box. I've written about it before, and so has Boing Boing

HP falls short with first TouchPad WebOS update

After Hewlett-Packard's hypefest for its WebOS-based TouchPad tablet, the real thing was a big disappointment, garnering lukewarm reviews from most technology websites. I found it surprisingly mediocre in its execution: slow performance, limited basic apps, and generally behind the curve compared to the iPad and Android 3.0-based tablets like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Justice Department Investigating Nortel Patent Sale

Federal officials may be investigating the consortium of companies that purchased Nortel's patents, an indication the government is watching such deals with an eye towards unfair competition as patent infringement litigation intensifies.

Last month, six companies including Apple, Microsoft and Research in Motion teamed up to pay a winning auction bid of $4.5 billion for 6,000 of Nortel's patents. According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. Department of Justice is now reviewing the purchase by the consortium, called Rockstar Bidco, about its plans for the patents, which could be used to block Android wireless devices from competing in the growing 4G market.

Patent rights have emerged as a powerful commodity among wireless companies as legal battles continue, with holdings protecting companies as well as providing ammunition in court. Major tech companies have filed suit with one another over patent infringement, and many now seek to acquire valuable stores of intellectual property to arm themselves accordingly.

The Nortel patents, which mainly support 4G and Wi-Fi technology, are vital for the growing 4G market, and the companies owning the patents may use them to block companies from using them on devices powered with Google's Android system.

In the future, companies forming groups such as Rockstar may have more buying power in patent sales, leaving companies that offer sole bids far behind.

Even as consortiums like Rockstar become more powerful, government oversight may become even more commonplace as companies seek to buy up patents. While many companies amass patents to protect themselves in court, critics, such as Google, complain they buy them to "block innovation."

Google's mobile OS has already proven itself legally vulnerable, with the company facing suits against it directly from Oracle, or indirectly through cases against phone makers who use Android, such as Apple's suit on HTC. The government may be increasingly aware of the escalation of patent infringement suits in the industry, and may be keeping its eye out as the legal tactic emerges as a way for companies to quench competition outside the market.

The DOJ, which hasn't confirmed the probe, may keep watching patent deals for possible antitrust violations, if it can be determined that the sales are illegally hindering competition. While the DOJ might not interfere in the sales process, it still may refuse to approve patent sales such as Nortel's if it determines consortiums have an unfair financial advantage when it comes to winning bidding wars and cornering the market.

Increasing government regulation may also help ensure companies are using patents to drive technology, not as defense tools in the courtroom.

Will the next "thought leader" please stand up? - Part 1

Will the next

Authored by: Mark Beckford

Four years ago, Nicholas Negroponte announced the One Laptop per Child initiative and the $100 laptop to much fan-fare at Davos in Switzerland. He captured the imaginations of world leaders with promises of ultra-affordable computing for school children around the world. He talked about changing the way children learn, improving their education and ultimately accelerating their access to the knowledge economy by deploying hundreds of millions of laptops.

That same year, Intel's nemesis, AMD, launched the 50x15 program with the goal of increasing internet access to 50% of the world's population by the year 2015. Unlike with Negroponte's announcement, AMD launched their program with an actual existing product, the Personal Internet Communicator (PIC).

These announcements put Intel, my employer at the time, on notice. The press from these two initiatives got under the skin of the the company's executives. The typical complaint was "We invest millions in emerging markets, and ship millions of low-cost PC's, but we we get no recognition from it." Intel's "thought leadership" effort was thus born. I was asked to pull a strategy and plan together to help Intel gain the perceived leadership position in bringing computing and internet access to under-served markets that currently don't have access.

We launched the World Ahead program in 2006 with the stated goal of giving one billion new users access to affordable, broadband computing. The three supporting pillars were accessibility (affordable computers), connectivity (broadband access), and education (training and digital content). These pillars were supported by the introduction of the unique computing platforms (e.g. the Classmate PC), broadband initiatives (Wimax deployments) and an expansion of Intel's Teach to the Future training program to an additional 8 million teachers emerging markets. The press we recieved from the launch was tremendous. Parallel speeches by Hector Ruiz of AMD and Steve Ballmer at the same event (the World Congress of IT) paled in comparison to Paul Otellini's speech about World Ahead. Later that year, Intel reorganized their emerging market sales for into an official "World Ahead" organization.

Then Microsoft jumped on the bandwagon with the launch of Unlimited Potential in mid-2007 with similar goals but an arguably more comprehensive initiative encompassing new of unique software solutions, marketing initiatives and sales programs.

The leaders lose their "luster"

As of this writing in March 2009, all of these programs still exist. OLPC, 50x15, World Ahead and Unlimited Potential are all still functioning. Some are struggling ... recent announcements by OLPC that their were cutting their staff by 50% and relying more on volunteers is just one example. Yet all of these organizations are still very active in the effort to increase computer access to under-served markets. On a trip this week to three countries in South America, both OLPC and the Classmate PC have been deployed, or are about to be deployed. Awareness and preference is very high for notebooks and netbooks. But none of these efforts could be called a stand-out "thought leader" today. A combination of time (hype can only last so long), previous challenges, and the capacity to continue to fund these projects all challenge their ability to lead. All of this is leading to what I believe will be a leadership void in the effort to bring affordable internet and computer access to emerging markets. But before I talk about this void and who could possibly fill it, I think it would help to explain what thought leadership is, and how a company can become one.

This post is the first part of a two-part series on thought leadership for computer makers in emerging markets. Part 2 will discuss the characteristics companies will need to develop if they want to become a "thought leader.

The Score: Sprint, LightSquared Team Up, People Really, Really Love Their Phones

Sprint just signed up for the same LTE services from LightSquared aviators say could interrupt jets' GPS signals, while some people might just be getting a little too attached to their smartphones.

The Score is a weekly column scoring controversial events in the mobile industry. Want to get to the point? We'll break it down and give you the score.

LTE Good for Sprint, Bad for Planes?

The Setup: Sprint said this week it's joining forces with satellite company LightSquared to boost its 4G service so it can compete against AT&T and Verizon. Its announcement came out the same day the Federal Aviation Administration said LightSquared's technology messes with planes' GPS systems.

Sprint is set to get $9 billion from LightSquared for spectrum service and another $4.5 billion in credits so it can buy half of LightSquared's satellite LTE capability. In the race for high-speed service, Sprint may finally get a leg up after ill-fated earlier attempts with troubled WiMax partner Clearwire. Sprint: +100 points

LightSquared gets to latch onto Sprint's 3G system and get its 4G system out a year ahead of time, all while saving $13 billion. So really, it's getting the $13 billion back it just gave to Sprint. Take that, wacky Extreme Coupon ladies! Can you match that at the grocery store with that big box of coupons? LightSquared: +100 points

Sprint might add LTE to its 4G network and get their unlimited service out to more people. If LTE can give Sprint more than one bar of service at a time, they might even bring some people over who don't want to pay AT&T and Verizon extra just for playing Farmville all day. And if the merger between AT&T and T-Mobile goes through, Sprint may be glad for the additional muscle. Sprint: +100 points

But LightSquared wants to add more than 40,000 antennas, including on some of Sprint's towers, so they can sell more service back to Sprint. Sounds good, right? LightSquared: +150 points, Sprint: +50 points

The FAA says LightSquared's frequencies might overpower GPS systems and the systems would have to be retrofitted to block out LightSquared signals. Now those 40,000 antennas may be looking a little ominous. LightSquared: -200 points

GPS interference could cost billions of dollars and kill hundreds of people if LightSquared gets to put up its antennas, the FAA says, and it wants a hold on the network expansions. LightSquared: -500 points; Public Safety: Can anyone really put a score on that?

The Score: Sprint: +250 points, LightSquared: -450 points

What it means: Sprint and LightSquared have teamed up for a multi-billion dollar bill that will let Sprint offer high-speed service and let LightSquared extend its services all over the country. Sprint is making a bundle of money, but LightSquared gets to put up even more antennas and sell more wholesale service to more people all at the same time.

They're both winners and mutual benefactors in the deal. But the FAA says LightSquared's systems are dangerous to aviation, and if GPS systems fail, planes could crash and kill hundreds of people. So while the Sprint/LightSquared deal is a corporate lifesaver, if the FAA blocks LightSquared's antennas, the satellite company might literally crash and burn.

Smartphone Users Falling in Love

The Setup: Many smartphone users are becoming addicted to their phones. Some of them check their phones as often as an obsessed stalker drives past his ex's house, even calling their phones pet names and buying them outfits.

Psychologists say some people would rather fiddle with their smartphones than actually interact with human beings. Hmmmm. Maybe these are people you might not want to interact with in the first place. Obsessed: -100 points, Not Obsessed: +100 points

The fear of missing out on something means some people sleep with their phones in their hands. Obsessed: -100 points, Not Obsessed: +100 points, Husbands, Wives, Girlfriends and Boyfriends of Obsessed: -100 points

People go quickly from not having a smart phone to falling in love with it, then giving it a name, buy it cute little outfits and ask it to the prom. Maybe this is okay, since you're likely stuck with it for the remainder of your contract, making the relationship with a phone longer-lasting than one on, say, "Jersey Shore." Obsessed: -300 points Not Obsessed: +300 points

Some people compulsively check their smartphones all day, just in case they'll miss something. Obsessed: -100 points, Not Obsessed: +100 points

Some people need quick rewards and instant information to keep from being bored, so they play with their phones instead of talking to other people. Instead, they'd rather interact with virtual cows and busy Smurfs, because you know important those Smurfberries really are in the grand scheme of things. Obsessed: -200 points, Not Obsessed: +200 points

The Score: Obsessed: -800 points, Not Obsessed: +800 points

What it means: As more people buy smartphones and add apps to them, they're falling in love with them. Could this mean Charlie Brown would fall in love with his iPhone, if he had one, and out of love with the "cute little redheaded girl?" Maybe.

It's pretty easy to get caught up in all of the cool apps and functions on those smartphones, since people get addicted to all kinds of things.

But psychoanalysts are coming up with new names for these addicts, and people who still know how to talk out loud and make eye contact with actual humans are making fun of people who just can't put down their phones. But people in love just don't care what everyone else thinks, anyway.

Spotify Hit With Patent Lawsuit

Music-streaming service Spotify, which launched in the U.S. just weeks ago, was today cited in a patent infringement suit, as litigation spreads to the music streaming industry.

San Diego-based PacketVideo filed a suit in the U.S. and Europe against Spotify over its cloud-based music service, after earlier, reportedly unsuccessful talks to broker a licensing agreement with the Swedish company. PacketVideo is seeking an injunction and damages.

"PacketVideo has a strong intellectual property portfolio and will take any necessary action needed to protect its intellectual property and prevent misuse of its patents," according to a statement issued by Joel Epstein, general counsel for PacketVideo.

PacketVideo's patents date back to the mid-1990s but were added to its portfolio when the company bought Switzerland-based SDC AG in 2007. The consensus is that the wording on the patent, which covers a "device for the distribution of music in digital form," is very broad.

Spotify has 10 million users worldwide and strongly contests the claim, saying its hybrid technology incorporates peer-to-peer technology.

"The result is what we humbly believe to be a better music experience," according to Spotify. "Packetvideo is claiming that by distributing music over the Internet, Spotify (and by inference any other similar digital music service) has infringed one of the patents that has previously been acquired by Packetvideo."

The filing may foreshadow increasing patent disputes in the music streaming business, similar to the pattern litigation is setting in the handset market, as epitomized by the war between Apple and Samsung over patents involving handset designs, which began earlier this year.

And, last month's bankruptcy auction of 6,000 of Nortel Network's patents may fuel a flare-up of future patent battles over operating software down the road. Google, maker of the Android OS, was frozen out of the final bid, which went to a group mostly consisting of its competitors.

Packetvideo's lawsuit with Spotify may or may not extend to others in the music streaming business, but its filing may portend an industry-wide trend toward patent battles.

Avoid the $180-per-user-per-year 3G rip-off

If you have a business smartphone data plan with your carrier, chances are you're paying $180 per user per year more than you have to. The reason? The major wireless carriers charge $15 extra per month on some or all of their 3G data plans for access to corporate email, meaning Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes, or GroupWise.

Linux Mobile Targets Android in China

A Linux-based mobile OS is set to launch in China, presenting a possible threat to competitors as they vie for smartphone and tablet customers in the Asian market.

Chinese ecommerce company Alibaba says it will launch its Aliyn OS at the end of the month, after working on it for three years. Phone manufacturer Tianyu intends to sell the Aliyn-based K-Touch Cloud-Smart Phone W700 for $416 in several days, with plans to market a tablet soon.

Aliyn's main features include the ability to run Android apps in the cloud, as well as those created with JavaScript and HTML5. It offers users cloud-based email, data, text message and photo storage too, besides regular web search and GPS.

"Introducing cloud apps to mobile devices not only brings a whole new user experience, but also greater ease for third-party mobile software developers who will be able to use Internet technology such as HTML5 and JavaScript to reduce the complexity in the app development process," said Wang Jian, president of Alibaba Cloud Computing.

In most regions of the world, Aliyn would face fierce and nearly devastating competition from Google's Android and Apple's iOS. But in China where Tianyu's new phone is set to launch, the OS may have a chance. The country's mobile broadband infrastructure is still underdeveloped and essentially up for grabs to whoever can create the biggest presence there first.

China is still behind in the smartphone market, though 3G subscriber numbers jumped nearly 50 percent to almost 70 million last April. But given the country's enormous population, 70 million is a small number compared to the U.S. market, in which nearly half of phone owners have smartphones.

If Aliyn can create a foothold in time, then, it may stand a chance against planned marketing onslaughts from rivals Apple, Google and Nokia, which are also angling for the Chinese market.

Apple's COO Tim Cook reportedly held talks with China Mobile to introduce the iPhone on its network. Doing so would give it 600 million more customers in the country, especially if Apple also decides to provide a cheaper, prepaid version of its iPhone 3GS.

Android smartphone maker HTC also reports increased success in the Asian market, shipping 11 million smartphones inside China this last quarter.

Other Android phone manufacturers too have their eyes on the populous country, as analysts predict over one billion people there will own smartphones in the next five years.

Nokia too is looking to push into Asia with lower-end handsets, which could take a chunk out of smartphone sales since the latter tend to be more affordable.

The competition is fierce, but this unexplored market is up for grabs, and upstarts like Aliyn may see success if it can grapple with rivals for the upper hand.
